i’ve also had a discussion recently about how getting calories/protein from meat is the most inefficient way to use land, especially in a factory farm culture.

for me, it’s an issue of over-consumption. we just eat too much, and therefore we kill too many animals, thus demanding the industry to continue at rapid speed. but we also eat too much because so much is produced and in our faces. i mean, i had to resist the urge to pull into FOUR mcdonalds today on my commute home from work. oh, these vicious cycles.

As for the music, I only have six of the 16, so I’m always happy for samplers. Preferable chocolate, but music is a close second.

As far as the spread of bacteria and viruses, i don’t know this for sure, but i would be willing to guess those cases are fewer 100 a year.

I’m interested in which countries that don’t factory farm that have food prices similar to the US and if they import food from any factory farming countries.

I’ll admit there are problems, but i think the pro of families having a large variety of affordable food far outweighs the cons.

I and i’m sure big farm would be willing to embrace an alternative if it could match the output and cost of factory farming.

Factory farming isn’t an industry i would ever be a part of (don’t have the stomach for it), but i don’t really care how my brat is made as long as its tasty and doesn’t kill me.

1. Factory farming is the only/easiest/best way to produce the amount of food at the current cost.

2. Factory farming produces food that’s cheap and safe to eat.

The first point is legitimate. The evolution of the food industry has lead us to factory farming. However, I personally believe that if it was possible to rebuild the entire system, we could create a system with comparable yields without the problems of factory farming. There are nations without factory farming industries that have similar food prices and supplies.

As for the second point, factory farming has been shown, in a large part, to be responsible for American’s higher rates of heart disease and obesity. Factory farming is also absolutely 100% to blame for most of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the spread of viruses like E. Coli. I would strongly question the claim that factory farming produces food that is healthy and safe.

However, is diseased and harmful meat better than starvation? Yeah, probably. But neither you nor I are actually in danger of starvation (unless you’ve had a really bad few months of poker). So…

It makes food more affordable for families. This probably reveals me to be as soulless as you are, but i could care less how small an animal’s cage is or if a cow is beaten over the head with a stick to get one last drop of milk. As long as factory farming produces food that’s cheaper and safe to eat i’ll be all for it.

Congrats on successfully having a part in raising a child for over year. Sorry i couldn’t make it to the party you had.
