Roman Empire, British Empire, Soviet Union, and modern day China. Hey all of the sudden we don't look so bad. Is the flag waving America is the greatest awesomest bestest nation ever stuff bullshit? Sure, but perspective is key. Despite our faults, there has never been a nation with more power and influence at its disposal and yet compared to other nations in similar positions we have used it far less then we could for imperialism and greed. The vast majority of Americans, if they have the motivation to, can carve out for themselves a good life. USA the reality falls far short of USA the symbol and probably always will, but all things considered its nice place to live and a country you can be relatively proud of.
